We were delighted to host a data analytics masterclass last night in the conservatory of the Stirling Court Hotel with Stirling Management School.
Speakers included Gillian Docherty from Data Lab Scotland, who revealed big data is worth over £322bn to the UK economy between 2015-2020. That amounts to a whopping £54bn per year!
Elaine McKechnie from the Cyber Risk Intelligence division of HSBC explained why the launch of the new MSc in Data Science for Business by the Management School is so important in bridging the gap between traditional data analytics and business acumen.
We were then joined by Hugo D'Ulisse from SAS Software who impressed upon us the importance of businesses organising and understanding data in such a way they can react and make decisions more quickly. He also revealed his company's involvement in using data analytics to help the Team GB Rowing Team achieve record-breaking success.
Finally, Steven Faull from Agrekko casually mentioned that Data Scientist has been named the 'Sexiest Job of the 21st Century' by the Harvard Business Review and underlined the importance of businesses embracing technology and change in the market place. The likes of Blockbuster and Kodak were used as cautionary tales of what can happen if organisations bury their heads in the sand, with a plea for companies to "start focused but think big".
All in all, it was an interesting and informative evening. We look forward to the next event with anticipation!
